Travel Tips – Azerbaijan

 

Passport control: To cross the border with Azerbaijan, you must have a valid foreign passport with a visa.

Excursions and activities: Going on excursions, carefully listen to the recommendations of the guide on clothes, for comfortable and convenient travel to interesting places.

Guided tours: Collecting for group and individual excursions are strictly at the appointed time and the place indicated in the excursion program and agreed with the guide on the eve. The maximum waiting time is 10 minutes. If you are late for a tour, no claims for services rendered are accepted. Telephone communications: The telephone code of Azerbaijan is +994. When calling Azerbaijan from other countries, it is necessary to dial the country code. 

Currency and Credit cards: Azerbaijan currency is Azerbaijani Manat. The Central Bank of Azerbaijan is the issuer of the currency of the country.

Pounds sterling, US dollars, and euros are easily exchanged in the city.

All goods and services are paid in local currency. Pounds sterling, US dollars, and euros are easily exchanged. Major hotels, supermarkets, and restaurants in Baku usually accept credit cards. There are ATMs in most major towns and cities.

Credit Cards: Most accept Visa, MasterCard, Electron, Cirrus, Maestro and InterBank cards. ATMs are not available outside larger cities. Visa and MasterCard are the most commonly accepted payment processors.

First Aid Kit: For those who regularly take medicines, it is recommended to take them with you. The guide has a formed first-aid kit, which is useful for you with mild indispositions, will save time in finding necessary medications, and will save you from problems.

Weather: In Baku, the summers are hot, humid, arid, and clear; the winters are long, very cold, dry, and partly cloudy; and it is windy year round. Over the year, the temperature typically varies from 36°F (2.2°C) to 89°F  (31.6°C) and is rarely below 29°F (-1.67°C) or above 97°F (36.11°C).

Tipping: If you like the service in cafes, restaurants, etc, you can leave a tip. Tipping in the amount of 10% of the total invoice amount is included in the general check.

Smoking: Smoking is prohibited in Public areas (healthcare facilities, educational facilities, cultural centers, taxis, airplanes, etc). Smoking is restricted to designated smoking areas in all other indoor public places, indoor workplaces, and public transport.

Transport: The capital city Baku is the only city in Azerbaijan with a metro service. Stations, trains, and facilities are clean and safe, with trains running every two to three minutes. Metro service operates between 06:00 and 00:00 Hrs. Fares are cheap and independent of the length of the journey. For using Baku metro you need to take temporary or permanent Baku Cards. You can take them from kiosks which are located at every metro station. It is operating in 3 languages: Azerbaijani, Russian, and English. So choose the appropriate language for you and select what you need.

Shopping souvenirs: Shopping and entertainment centers are open generally from 10:00 to 21:00/22:00 hrs.

Hotel Accommodation: Check-in at the hotel, usually takes place after 14:00. Upon arrival for accommodation at the hotel you need to present your passport.

It is also recommended that you take a hotel’s visiting card so that, if you get lost in the city, go back without problems to the hotel. The address of the hotel is also indicated in the tourist's road book, which you were given along with the tourist's envelope.

When leaving the hotel, pay for additional services and take a document confirming payment.
