Rostov-Veliky is a real jewel on the Golden Ring road. It was the capital of a mighty principality in the thirteenth century. It deserved to be called "Veliky" (the great) because of its great importance in commercial, civil and religious matters. Repeatedly ravaged by Tartar nomads and Polish invasions, the city rose again and again to regain its former glory. The grand ensemble of the Kremlin, well-constructed churches with ancient frescoes and ancient icons, and beautifully decorated wooden town houses create a unique atmosphere. Rostov is famous for its enamel works, bell ringing and icon painting.
