The small town is located a few kilometers from Moscow and is the location of the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius. The Lavra is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as one of the best examples of a functioning Orthodox monastery. It has been Russia's most important religious center for more than six hundred years and the most splendid of all the monasteries. The monastery is surrounded by impressive fortress walls. The marvelous architecture of the cathedrals and the splendid interiors, decorated by old masters including the iconostasis of Andrey Rublev, are remarkable. The golden and azure onion dome of Assumption Cathedral is one of the most photographed in Russia. The museum of ancient history and art of the monastery houses a large collection of jeweled robes, gems, and icons from previous centuries. The nearby Sergiev Posad is the center for matryoshka craftsmanship. Many rare nesting dolls and national wooden toys are displayed and for sale in the town's toy museum.
