The Art Museum in Murmansk is a huge part of the cultural life of the region. In 1989, the City Administration decided to turn the old first stone building into an Art Gallery, and in March 1990, it got its first collection of paintings, graphics, sculptures, and decorative art. Now, the museum has over 3000 units of art, and the works of Murmansk's regional masters, who reflect the unique culture of the North, make up the special collection. This collection shows the evolution of Russian fine art in the North in the 1960s-1990s, and the most typical styles of Artist Union creativity. The Murmansk Art Museum is a hub for cultural communication on the peninsula.
